The County Seat That Built America's Grandest Cars
Auburn was platted in 1836 by Wesley Park and became the seat of DeKalb County the following year, but the town is best known for the Auburn Automobile Company, founded by brothers Frank and Morris Eckhart out of their family's Eckhart Carriage Company around 1903. Under later owner Errett Lobban Cord, the company also acquired Indianapolis-based Duesenberg Motors in 1926, building the Model J and SJ Duesenbergs before going bankrupt in the Depression in 1937.
A Manufacturing Town's Housing and Plumbing
A town that supported a major auto manufacturer for more than three decades built housing in step with that industrial employment, and Auburn's roughly 13,565 residents today live in a mix of that manufacturing-era construction and newer development.
