Named for the Bluffs Above the Wabash
Bluffton was founded in 1838 as the seat of Wells County, itself created in 1835 and named for Indian agent William Wells, son-in-law of Miami chief Little Turtle. The town takes its own name from the river bluffs along the Wabash River near the original town site -- early settlement in the area dates to Dr. Joseph Knox's 1829 cabin a few miles downstream and Allen Norcross's 1831 homestead on the opposite bank.
